Smart Energy GB, the campaign group for the national smart meter rollout has warned that micro businesses are not reaping the benefits of smart meters because they aren’t fully informed.
Only 5% have proactively requested a smart meter with others seemingly suspicious of the new technology.
Reluctance is reportedly down to perceived disruption to business as usual; a lack of awareness or belief in the benefits smart meters; and confusion between advanced metering and smart metering.
Smart Energy GB chief executive Sacha Deshmukh said:
“Smart Energy GB has a big task ahead, to make sure that everyone in Great Britain can say yes to a smart meter and will understand how to use one to better manage their gas and electricity.”
It appears some education is required as there are over 2 million microbusinesses in the UK. Perhaps, there’s a certain amount of supplier mistrust and a lack of understanding as to the role of brokers and TPIs.
With electricity being cited as the number one concern by nearly half of small businesses, you’d think they’d be more open to a cost-cutting solution. In fact, according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, smart meters could save microbusinesses approximately £1.44 billion.
So we need to shout about smart meters, their advantages and increase trust in the energy market. Business Juice is embracing this and we find that our transparency and genuine desire to give customers the best deal, also gives them peace of mind.
