What is an MPRN and an MPAN?
- MPRN – M Number (MPRN, Meter Point Reference Number) – the unique reference applied to the gas supply point in a premise, the gas industry version of the S Number
- MPAN – MPAN Core – The unique reference for a metering system at a supply point. The ‘bottom line’ of the S Number, the first two digits of which signify the PES Region within which the supply point is based.
- Top Line – the first 8 digits of the S Number displaying Profile Class, Meter Timeswitch Code and Line Loss Factor.
- S Number – a unique identifier used in the electricity market to define the supply point for a meter and its generic characteristics. Made up of the MPAN Core and the Top Line.
Utilising the elements of the S Number, the PES Region, Profile Class, Meter Timeswitch Code and Line Loss Factor enables an accurate bespoke price to be calculated for your meter.
Why are they important?
In the business energy market prices and contract are struck on a bespoke for each business based on set criteria.
This criteria is based on your metering configuration, consumption, credit score, location, business type, demand profile, contract length and payment method.
A crucial element of this is the M Number in the gas industry and the S Number in the electricity industry. These references identify the metering configuration, location and demand profile of the customer and enable accurate pricing to be executed.
As a result the S Number and M Number are critical pieces of information that help get your business the best deal on your energy.
As a result it is important to identify your S Number or M Number quickly and easily. These should always be presented on your bills however they can be tucked away and easy to miss.
