Whilst your gas unit rate will be measured in kWh and you will pay for your gas by the kWh your gas meter may record consumption in either cubic meters (m3) or hundreds of cubic feet (ft3). To make sense of your bill you will therefore need to convert your meter readings into kWh.
Converting m3 to kWh
To convert a metric meter, one that measures in m3 to kWh the calculation is as follows:- Your meter advance (current read minus previous read) Multiplied by the ‘volume correction factor’ (1.02264)
- Multiplied by the ‘calorific value’ (40) and
- Divided by 3.6
Converting ft3 to kWh
To convert an imperial meter, one that measures in ft3 to kWh the calculation is as follows:- Your meter advance (current read minus previous read)
- Multiplied by the ‘metric conversion factor’ (0.028317)
- Multiplied by the ‘volume correction factor’ (1.02264)
- Multiplied by the ‘calorific value’ (40) and
- Divided by 3.6
- Multiplied by 100
